It's original called"Haishenshe" and then renamed"Tongyue Shepan Orchestra". It is said that there is an artist surnamed Liu who moved to Hongdong County, Shanxi Province, who brought this skill back to the folk when he returned home from his old age. Later, the skill was introduced from Hongtong County of Shanxi Province by an ancestor Mr. Liu moved to Shuimotou and it has been passed down for 22 generations and has a history of more than 600 years. Shepan performance has gradually become a traditional custom for the people of Shuimotou to celebrate festivals. During annual festivals or festive events, Shepan performers are obliged to perform for the villagers. The style of Shepan music originated from court music. After it was introduced into the folk, its performance style was still standard and metrical. The music style was elegant, exquisite, melodious and vigorous, and rich in the verve of Tang music. It was unique because it was different from the extensive folk music. There are more than 20 kinds of musical instruments played by Tongyue Shepan Orchestra, including pipe, flute, Zheng(a Chinese zither with 21 or 25 strings), Sheng( Chinese mouth-blown free reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes), Erhu (Two-string Fiddle), Yunluo (a set of 10 small tuned gongs mounted in a wooden frame), Yunban, Muyu(woodblock or slitdrum), Pengling (round-shape copper percussion instrument), etc, some of which are self-made musical instruments. Shepan is an important part of the excellent traditional culture of the Chinese nation. It has high folklore and artistic research value and is of great significance to the exploration and research of Heluo culture.
