围棋在中国有近4000的历史，千年来一直传承和沿用在皇宫贵族，达官贵人群体，到了宋代以后，这种棋艺逐渐走向了民间。

作为中华四艺之一的围棋，与华夏文明重要发祥地的洛阳有着不解之缘。关于围棋起源，晋张华《博物志》记载，“尧造围棋，以教子丹朱。或云：舜以子商均愚，故作围棋以教之。”尧舜处于“河出图洛出书”期间，围棋棋盘、棋子与“河图”“洛书”的方形图案和白点黑点组成的数阵相似。明代解缙《观弈棋》有“河洛千条待整治，吴图万里需修容”的诗句。

洛阳历史上的许多帝王将相文人墨客都是围棋爱好者，东汉洛阳史学家班固不仅著有《汉书》《两都赋》，还写有《奕旨》是我国现存最早的关于围棋理论的文章；唐代诗人白居易晚年归隐龙门香山寺号称香山居士，有诗“棋罢嫌无敌，诗成愧在前”；北宋欧阳修晚年自号“六一居士”即“藏书一万卷，金石遗文一千卷，有琴一张，有棋一局，而常置酒一壶”，外加”一翁”足见其围棋之喜爱。

上世纪60年代，洛阳当代围棋开始起步，经过十几年发展，从洛阳走出一批驰骋国内棋坛的名将，如汪见虹，王冠军，马石等。2013年，时越在LG世界围棋棋王战中战胜韩国选手夺冠，成为洛阳第一个，也是河南省第一个围棋世界冠军。

Weiqi(Go), with a history of nearly 4,000 years in China, has been inherited and played by the nobles, royal and dignitaries for thousands of years. The skill of Weiqi has gradually become popular among the people until the Song Dynasty(960-1279). Weiqi, as one of the four Chinese arts, is closely related to Luoyang which is the birthplace of Chinese civilization. Many emperors and literati in Luoyang s history were lovers of Weiqi, including historian Ban Gu(Luoyang historian of the Eastern Han Dynasty), Bai Juyi (poet of the Tang Dynasty) and Ouyang Xiu (politician and litterateur of the Northern Song Dynasty). Luoyang's contemporary Weiqi got started in the 1960s. After more than ten years of development, a number of famous Weiqi players have emerged from Luoyang In 2013, Shi Yue defeated Korean player in the LG World Go Championship, becoming the first Weiqi world champion in Luoyang and Henan Province.
