洛阳是中国剪纸流行最早的地区之一，洛阳剪纸历史悠久，风格独特，源远流长。据考证，洛阳剪纸起源于隋唐，从造型风格上大致可分两类：一类是用剪子铰制而成的比较粗犷厚朴的民俗剪纸，作窗花之用，主要分布于农村；另一类则是以线为主、线面结合，用刻刀刻制而成的极为精细的精巧型剪纸，经过框裱或轴裱之后作为装饰或礼品之用，主要流行于城市。刘心牡丹纸雕属于后者，它既继承了豫西剪纸的艺术风格，具有商周青铜纹饰、南阳汉画像石及北魏龙门造像和宋代开封木板年画的特点，质朴粗犷，雄浑大气，又突出了洛阳剪纸的文化特色，题材上更偏重于表现洛阳的牡丹文化和历史风物。刘心牡丹纸雕，是洛阳剪纸艺术中的一个优秀代表。
