毛笔最初用兽毛捆扎，放置于竹竿和木杆中，沾泥浆所写，经过几千年的演变和发展，毛笔一直作为书写的主要工具，为我国的文化传承作出了不可磨灭的贡献。

太仓村的毛笔制作始于明末清初年间，距今有三百年的历史，多以家庭作坊为主，手工制作，代代相传。在清朝至民国前后达到兴盛，当时太仓村毛笔制作就有二三十家，“玉天斋”、“潘友文”、“潘书冒”、“潘云升”、“潘太升”最为著名。

太仓毛笔以“笔齐、肚圆、头尖、体健”而著称，使用起来刚柔相济，结实柔软，笔尖凝聚，毛不掉不脱，不分不叉，挥洒自如，虚实并进，可大可小，吸墨充足，可胖可廈，可圈可点，绵里藏针，遒劲有力，婉转流畅。使用起来妙笔生花，得心应手，深得使用者的赞许和称美。太仓毛笔制作技艺精湛，毛笔选料上乘，外形美观，制作技艺求精，经久耐用。传承文化，服务社会，服务于文化各界，推动社会文化的进步和发展。

Writing Brush is originally bound with animal hair, placing in bamboo and wood poles and written in the mud. After thousands year's evolution and development, the brush has always been used as the main tool of writing, making an indelible contribution to the cultural heritage of our country. The brush making in Taicang village began in the late Ming and early Qing Dynasty, with a history of 300 years. It was mainly made by family workshops, and the hand making process handed from generation to generation. Taicang Writing Brush prospered from the Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China, and there were more than twenty brush making workshops in Taicang Village. Taicang Writing Brush is famous for its shape, and firm and soft in use. People praise and love it because of powerful and smooth in writing and handy with facility. The brush is exquisite in craftsmanship, with excellent materials for writing brushes, beautiful appearance, refined production skills and durability. The brush inherits the culture, serves all sectors of society and culture, and promotes the progress and development of social culture.
