  洛阳海神乐源于周，当时武王伐纣灭股后在洛阳大封天下，并形成了严格的礼乐制度，当时祭海的音乐就是洛阳海神乐的源头。后来海神乐作为宫廷音乐代代相传，到唐朝时非常兴盛。安史之乱后流入洛阳民间，被称为洛阳海神，演奏团体称为海神社。

  洛阳海神乐演奏内容多为古曲，节奏平缓、韵味颇近宫廷音乐，是当今罕见的隋唐宫廷宴乐“活化石”。演出规模宏大、庄重，社班分文场、武场、仪仗三部分，演奏乐器以民族传统古乐器为主，包括管子、笙、云锣、笛子、古筝、二胡、云板、木鱼、碰铃等。

  洛阳海神乐表演方式根据时间和场合分为锣鼓乐、锣鼓舞、吹打乐、吹唱乐、伴舞乐以及清唱乐；演奏形式分为座乐和行乐两种。座乐适合于室内和舞台表演，行乐以吹奏为主，打击乐只起节拍伴奏作用，适合庙会、观礼台前及行进的群众场合。

Luoyang Haishen Yue was originated from the Zhou Dynasty. After King Wu defeated King Zhou and ended the Yin Dynasty, a strict system of rites and music in Luoyang was established. Among them, the music of sea sacrifice was the source of later Luoyang Haishen Yue. Luoyang Haishen Yue was passed down from generation to generation as court music and flourished in the Tang Dynasty After the Anshi Rebellion, it became popular among ordinary people, known as Luoyang Haishen. Luoyang Haishen Yue are mainly ancient music, with a slow and steady beat close to court music. It is a rare"living fossil"of the court music of the Sui and Tang dynasties. The instruments used in Luoyang Haishen Yue are mostly traditional ancient music instruments, including Guanzi (Pipe),Shen (Chinese mouth-blown free reed instrument consisting of vertical pipes), Yunluo (a set of 10 small tuned gongs mounted in a wooden frame), Flute, Guzheng (Half-tube Zither or Chinese zither), Erhu(Two-string Fiddle), Yunban, Muyu (Woodblock or Slitdrum), Pengling (round-shaped copper percussion instrument), and etc. According to the time and occasion, the performance of Luoyang Haishen Yue are divided into gongs and drums, gong and drum dance, wind and percussion, wind singing, dance music and cappella. And the performance manners are divided into seat performance and marching formance. The former is suitable for indoor and stage performances.The latter is suitable for temple fairs, celebration and marching occasions.
